  • LGBT Ally Tom Perez Elected DNC Chair

    Gertrude Stein Democratic Club Earl Fowlkes met with new DNC Chair Tom Perez.

    Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez became the new Democratic Party chair on Feb. 25, receiving the most votes at the winter meeting of Democratic National Committee members.

     

  • Members Elect 2017 Officers

    Left to right: Vice President for Administration Alex Morash, Vice President for Legislative and Political Affairs Paul Austin, Treasurer Justin K. George, President Earl Fowlkes, and Secretary Jesse Garcia were elected on Nov. 14.

    On Nov. 14, members of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club held officer elections. Earl Fowlkes was reelected as president. He will be joined by a new board:

    Paul Austin, vice president for legislative and political affairs

    Alex Morash, vice president for administration

    Justin K. George, treasurer

    Jesse Garcia, secretary

     

  • Stein Democrats Recognize Trailblazers

    Sarah McBride (center) brought her parents Dave (left) and Sally (right) to the GSDC Holiday Party. She received the Desi Philip Deschaine Young Democrat of the Year Award. 

    Members of Gertrude Stein Democratic Club gathered on Dec. 13 to celebrate the organization's 40th anniversary and recognize individuals who went above and beyond for the LGBTQ community.  "Although we didn't win nationally this past election, we still need to celebrate our advocates and leaders who worked hard for our community," said Earl Fowlkes, GSDC president.

  • Several Marches Coming to DC this Spring

    On March 10, Standing Rock and Native Nations led a march through downtown Washington D.C. They demanded that Tribal interests not be marginalized in favor of the interests of corporations and other governments.

    Are you ready to march, again? Several national movements are coming to the nation's capital this spring to bring awareness to communities under attack by the Trump Administration. Groups are eager to replicate the success of the Women's March on Washington and keep the progressive movement growing.

  • Police Chief Addresses Hate Crimes

    Peter Newsham, shown here addressing the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club membership at March’s meeting, was nominated by Mayor Muriel Bowser to serve as police chief on Feb. 23. The DC Council will vote on his appointment in April. 

    At the March membership meeting, DC Police Chief Peter Newsham introduced himself to Gertrude Stein Democratic Club members and talked about his priorities as the city’s new law enforcement leader. But the night’s conversation was dominated by the results of DC’s 2016 hate crimes report, which showed an increase in crimes directed at the LGBT community.
